The Road to Zero Food Waste

Food waste is a growing problem worldwide, and as a bakery, we felt it was important to do something about it. Bread is a staple in homes across North America and beyond, so we made great tasting artisan bread that gives back. We started by operating out of Zero-Waste certified bakeries, but our commitment to making a difference goes beyond that, to working with researchers, charities, educators, and best of all, you!

Together, we’re on the Road to Zero Waste!

Supporting Research

Truly understanding the core of any problem is the only way to fully solve it. Through strategic partnerships with agricultural and food waste experts, and providing our support for food waste research, we will help uncover new insights of the food waste problem, and what we can all do to eliminate it for good.

In 2017, River Road Bakehouse partnered with the University of Guelph in Ontario, Canada and made a $15,000 donation to the Guelph Food Waste Project. This internationally renowned project comprises a team of researchers committed to reducing the environmental impact of our food systems while also improving food security. Our donation will support food waste research aimed at uncovering new and actionable insights that will contribute to reducing food waste across Canada. Supporting Food Waste Charities

Food waste is a problem happening every day, even in our local communities.

Not only does food waste have an adverse effect on the environment, but it’s also perfectly good food that could help those affected by food insecurity.

By partnering with local food waste charities across North America, we’re committed to fighting the issue on the ground level – diverting quality surplus food from landfills to those who need it, and supporting education and awareness at grassroots events.

This year, River Road Bakehouse will support twelve non-profit organizations across Canada and the United States through monetary donations put towards their local food waste initiatives. But we need your support too! By playing our Food Waste Warrior Quiz, North Americans are invited to brush up on their food waste knowledge, while also getting the chance to donate up to $0.50 to one of our local food waste charities. Education & Empowerment

The more we all understand the problem of food waste and ways to act against it, the faster we will be able to reach a solution. We’re creating a movement that educates and empowers everyone to make a difference in the fight against food waste.

From quick food hacks to shopping tips, there are many ways you can take action against food waste in your own home – that’s what we support and believe in.

To encourage education, sharing, and donations, we partnered with the University of Guelph’s Food Waste Project to develop the Food Waste Warrior Quiz. Using research and insights from our partners at the University of Guelph, the quiz includes tips and insights for tackling food waste both in the home and at the grocery store.
